I have a friend that needs a new computer. He wants something that will be mainly used for uploading/editing/storing photos, and he also likes to watch the MLB games online. So I need some recommendations as to what hardware would be be suited for this type of build. Ideally I'm looking to get the most bang for my buck without buying crappy components.

What MOBO should I use for this build? I would like something that will allow me to use a 64 bit OS as so we can use 4 GB of ram.

I'd start with the Recession Special rig and add/remove parts to suit.  Note these are gaming rigs, but at the very end they have benchmarks which include ratings of each rig for Photoshop and other applications that your buddy will find relevant.

I recently built a PC based on a mix of the Budget Surplus and Economic Stimulus rigs and it is working out very well.  Haven't OC'd it yet though, and am looking for a new monitor.

Case: Lian Li
Motherboard: Asus
Power Supply: PC Power and Cooling
CPU: AMD
Memory: GSkill
Hard Drive: Western Digital
Optical  Drives: LG SATA II

What is the budget like?  The Lian Li cases are a little expensive but he'll be able to build out of it for years to come.

He's not much of a computer guy and isn't looking to spend a bunch of money. Which Asus MOBO would you recommend? Once I can decide on a MOBO for this application I should be able to figure out the rest of the hardware from there.

If you is looking to build on a budget I suggest you take a strong look at the AMD Athlon II X4 620 Quad-Core Processor. A good solid four core processor at $100 that performs as well or better in m most cases than a Intel processors costing $50 more.

You can build a system based on that processor with 4GB ram and a 1TB hard drive that meets the requirement set out above and do it for under $500.

That processor is the most bang for the buck right now.

If you have a Microcenter store nearby you can get smokin' in store only deals on processors and sometimes motherboards.  Check out their website.

(I got my i7 920 for $199 some time ago)

Would I need a video card with that MOBO? if I'm reading it right there's an onboard video card.

My general rule is to always get a video card.  Even the cheap $50 ATI video cards will be better than using integrated video.

Can I email my newegg cart to anyone to have them check it over before I order parts to make sure that everything will work together and that I'm not missing anything I need.

No you will not need a video card than onboard video chipset is pretty good and can handle HD video... you may want to get a more powerful video card if you intend to do any graphics intensive gaming. And the video card is something you can add later if you decide you need it.

He only wants to do a bit of photo editing (nothing too major im guessing and watch MLB games on it).

Then that onboard video will be fine, and again he can get a more powerful video card later if he finds he needs it.

Not to nitpick, but why an IDE DVD drive when you can get the Samsung 223 in SATA form?

ETA:  what about mobo?

Tell your friend to get a Dell. You do not want to be on the hook for every problem that pops up, and you will be.

He doesn't want a Dell and I already told him that I'm not responsible for anything unless I damage something. The computer I built a few months back has been flawless so I'm not too worried about problems with the build, I just need to make sure all the parts will work together.
