Apparently the BluRay laser module bit the dust in mine and its out of warranty
Anybody else tried replacing this part? I've got it ordered, but its not here yet. Pretty simple fix and should only run me 70 bucks vs the 150 that Sony was going to charge to just look at it, then tack on more for parts. |

I try to fix just about anything that breaks in my posession. However, when it comes to something as precise as a bluray laser (And a machine with all sorts of built-in DRM safeguards...), I think I would opt to have Sony fix it too.
Also, if it is one of the early PS3s with the "ps2 chip on the motherboard so it is truly backwards compatible", it is worth it. OR, if it IS a PS3 with the PS2 chip on the mobo, it is probably worth $150 to someone so THEY can fix it. (Any you can buy a new PS3slim...) |

IF the problem was a burnt out laser, it COULD be that it is not aligned correctly.
I know the whole ps2 new laser realignment procedure is not difficult, but has a few extra steps other than "slap in the new laser". Yes, the PS2 is a little bit less complicated than a PS3. However, a laser-to-read-a-disk machine requires the laser to hit a really thin line. There might be an alignment procedure out there somewhere... |
