I'm building my first computer right now and I'm at the stage where I need to hook the PSU up to the misc. accessories, MOBO, optical drives, etc. For the optical drives my hard drive and my DVD burner both use SATA connects to power them and my PSU has wires with SATA connects on the end. Can I just plug any SATA plug from the PSU into my optical drive/hard drive?

Yeah.

(Can anyone explain to me what the hell the PSU's "rails" are.  In the past 5 years I've seen that term come up often in regards to load capacity. Never saw it before that time.)

Another question. My PSU has a shit load of 4 prong (what look like) female connectors and some of my computer case fans have 4 prong male and female connects coming off of them. Do I just plug any 4 prong male in any 4 prong female? What about the left over female plug coming from my case fans?

Also I have 1 2 prong male adapter coming from my case that is in a 4 prong adapter shell,  do I just plus this into one of the 4 prong female connects coming from my PSU?

to answer the OP>    any of the sata power connectors will work.    IF the harddrive has both the molex (4 wire power connector)  and the sata power.  ONLY plug one or the other NOT BOTH!!!   and then plug in the data cable

12v rails usually refer to the lines for the video card, most higher end modern GPU's require 2 lines coming in for 30a+ in power. Back in the day or even with low end cards today they don't require any lines direct from the psu they get their juice through the mobo.
