If I have an old computer that I no longer use and it has XP on it can I remove XP from that computer and legally install it on a different computer?

Yep. Or do yourself a favor and upgrade to Linux. Linux Mint 7 would be a painless transition for a newbie. And it's free.

Depends on the license type.

If it was a retail license copy of Windows XP then the answer is yes.

If it came already installed on the computer and/or it is an OEM copy then the answer is no.

Your EULA should specify what license type you have.

But a lot of people don't concern themselves with the finer points of the EULA and just install it anyway.

FWIW, I am just answering the question, not debating the licensing scheme.
