Ok had my laptop checked out by the easy tech service at staples (closest pc service). they said that my power supply is fine- that is is either my mother board or or processor is fried. they aren't sure which. so what are my options? should i take it to someone else? i really miss my lappy...

You could get your hands on a new processor and plug it in.  If it doesn't work you might as well buy a new computer.

Sorry but if one or the other is toast, you're SOL.

2 schools of thought here:

#1: Take Staples/Geek Squad advise with a grian of salt.  It COULD be a quick fix, or they don't know WTF they are talking about, and wouldn't mind making a sale.

#2:  If it IS an old laptop, there are a ton of great deals out there now.  Figure out repair cost vs new machine.

My only question would be whether or not this is a SATA HDD, or IDE?  My Gateway got it's MOBO fried by a surge, snagged another laptop off of craigslist for 200 and swapped the HDD.  Laptop repair cost hasnt caught up with how low total unit price is.

Take your hard drive out.

You will be able to tell by how the pins look.  Besides there should be a label on the hard drive that helps you confirm.
