I back up my computer to a stand alone hard drive, using the Vista backup program.  I have whats probably a stupid question.

If my computer gets infected with a virus, won't restoring the data from the standalone hard drive just reload the virus onto my desktop?

also, what other precautions should i be taking (i use AVG)?  i've read about people wiping hard drives and starting from scratch (reinstalling the OS?).  what to i need to be able to do this without losing data?

the stuff i'm worried about loosing is family photos, if that makes a diffrence.

It would depend on what you backup.

first.   pictures don't get infected with virus's so copying them to a external drive is safe.

second.  doing the vista backup is backing up your data not the part of widows that gets infected.   so using the vista backup program is completely safe.
