I have at times used the repair feature in Windows XP setup to reinstall system files, I just did this with Vista, using the upgrade choice, even though it was not an upgrade. What ever you do, I would clone/ghost the HDD first before proceeding that way you can try again if you fail. |

Quoted: Best option. Thanks Dave. I'm been thinking of installing a second HD anyway to store music, pics etc... I might just move everything to the new "D" drive and nuke "C" to start from scratch. Are you in up in northern Colorado? Nothing runs better than a clean installation! |

The repair feature wouldn't work for me. Apparently it sees that I have current updates and says it can't install. I didn't go further, but I bet I have to nuke the updates before trying repair.
Luckily this shit box continues to work. All it has on it is IE, not much else. Surf box only. |

you could try sfc/scannow in the command prompt. That will go through and restore all your registry? files. You type that in, hit enter, it'll scan for a little bit then prompt you to load the XP cd, then go through and restore files without loosing all your documents. As for the bookmarks - go to bookmarks at the top of the window, click organize bookmarks, then you can export them, save them to a file. Then if you want, just email them to yourself. Then when you re-install everything, import that file and everything will be back just like it was. |
