Anyone here have one or used the software?
Microsoft has a free 30 day trial for it.. Interested in opinions on it. |

try punching yourself in the face, that will be similar to using WHS
i know it has been fixed, but i will always remember it as "the production, retail software that had a KNOWN ISSUE where it would randomly corrupt your data, took several months to get fixed" linux distributions can fill the "home server" role 10x better than WHS |

The corruption issue was limited to purposely shared files from the WHS when edited directly by certain programs by a client machine. This has been fixed by rollup 1. This issue did not affect computer backup or remote access. And seriously, if you are waiting for the perfect OS that goes to RTM without a single flaw, then you should stop using computers. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946676 |

This has been fixed by rollup 1. This issue did not affect computer backup or remote access. And seriously, if you are waiting for the perfect OS that goes to RTM without a single flaw, then you should stop using computers. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946676 the primary objective of WHS is to share and store data. the problem affects, wait for it, SHARING AND STORING DATA. they should have tested storing pictures on WHS and then trying to edit them with Vista Photo Gallery - this is not some weird configuration or usage pattern. it was billed as a more secure and reliable storage device, which it clearly was not. if the Apache Foundation releases "Apache Streaming Music and Video Server 2010" as a final version for public consumption, and it fails to stream music or video, would that not be a total clusterfuck? i am really sick of microsoft shitting out half-baked products and abusing their customers

And for the file sharing case, it only occurred if you opened a shared file directly with one of those applications and the WHS had more than one hard drive that was shared as a single volume and even then it was erratic. The workable solution was to copy it locally, edit, and then upload back. I guess that might be a little too difficult for some people but if they can't do that workaround, they also have no business trying to bootstrap a linux distro. If WHS was only a file server, then hella yea I would say use a linux distro. But it's not. Sorry, you can't convince me otherwise. |

The initial product was buggy.. but MS got the issues addressed and corrected. For the $$... you get a LOT of integrated systems. HP's MediaSmart server is a perfect execution of a retail product that uses low-cost hardware and the MS software. I am normally not an MS fan, especially in enterprise networking.. they can't possibly predict the capabilities of the most determined idiot- They DID however get a product out that I use. I'm thinking of putting an MHS at each of my work sites.. still working on the integration piece to sync the backups of my laptop/desktops, etc and keep my music available.. globally. -L |

Is there any reason why Windows Home Server can not run Utorrent? This way it can handle the Bit Torrent downloads and free up any other machine that originally were running it. Depends on where you set your security stack.. My WHS doesn't get anywhere near a P2P outside of my system enclave. -L |
I have my server set up, a 650gig hd on the way(46$ delivered was the last one in stock )
The hardest part so far was figuring out what software to install on each computer on the network.( WHS folder on the dvd has a setup program for each computer.) I used vnc for the second computer and installed everything remotely. Set up a profile and shared network folder for each user (2 so far) will be 3 as of next Wednesday, (Daughter got a 4.0 so she gets a new netbook) I will update if there is anything new.. But so far is pretty straight forward.. All Computers running xp pro and home.. |
