I just installed a SATA Samsung DVD burner I got from Newegg. The advertised write speed was 22x for DVD's. I did a test run with some Sony DVD's and it said it was writing at 4x speed max. The DVD burner was a OEM unit so it didn't have any software so I am using the NTI DVD Gold software I currently have on my computer. Is there some other software (preferably free for download) that I can use to speed up this burner?

22x may be the max speed. Also, you may not be able to feed it data at 22x speed so it's choking. If you give us a link to the model, we can provide better answers.

Here is the DVD Burner link:

The DVD's I am using to burn say "Sony Corporation DVD+R 16x" on them.

Thanks

It also depends on what speed the media supports

My DVD burner drive supports doing dual layer media at up 8x, but if I only buy 4x compatible media, then it will only burn at 4x

If it was burning at only 4x speed, then you either have a slow computer or I suspect you bought the cheap 4x compatible media. 22x compatible media is more expensive

Here is a very good place for buying CD/DVD writeable media: http://www.meritline.com/

CDBurnXP is free open source for Windows.

It does DVD burns, CD, etc.

Keep in mind though, the numbers on the optical drive mean nothing, basically.  That's just the max theoretical speed based on the specs of the components.

It does not factor in your SATA bus, your originating media, quality of the blanks, fragmentation of the original file, etc.

You need to expect somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 the max rated speed _at best_ for it especially if you don't want to burn a lot of coasters.

4x is a bit low, so maybe there is something to improve there, but with the el-cheapo equipment now days if it burns at all you are still doing pretty good.

Windows 7 has a built-in DVD burner app.
Works nice, has some slick menu templates, too.
