Hey guys,
I am an IS major and am currently taking a computer ethics course. I have a presentation Monday and need ideas. The topic should be a current (6 months) issue in computer science or ethics. Thanks |

How about delving into the ethics of using computerized medical records to enable socialized medicine in the US. This topic is timely, and involves IT/IS along with mega potential for ethics issues.
There is a wealth of information readily available on the net: Google HIPAA for existing Federal laws concerning medical record data. Google AHLTA for information on the DoD electronic medical record system. Google VISTA for information on the VA electronic medical record system. There are also a metric butt load of civilian systems in existence that you can find info on. |

Electronic medical records is a good topic. I was going to touch on the dangers of leaking private information as well as providing adequate backups. The socialist part of the plan would be hard for me to present in it's entirety because I get visibly pissed off when talking about anything related to the Kenyan and his minions.
Also: Allowing the photography of fallen troops as they come back from Iraq. The new policies of facebook and the privacy concerns of it's users. |

I completely understand your hesitance to broach politics in a University setting, but personally this is a topic that I could get a lot of emotional mileage from. Maybe you could just mention electronic medical record systems in passing as possibly being the most dangerous use of computer technology on the horizon. Good luck! |
