Does anybody know if the retaining bracket for bolt on heat sync's is glued on or pressed onto the motherboard?

I'm trying to install a core 2 duo in a lga 775 socket but the original heat sync is bolted on and the one that came with
the new cpu is pushpin. I'm I going to have to buy another bolt on heat sync?

Sounds like an aftermarket heatsink, most likely it's bolted from underneath...  You'll have to pull the whole motherboard.  Doh!

if the old heatsink is still good to go and meets your cooling needs, you could just clean off the contact surface with alcohol, reapply thermal grease and remount it with your new CPU...

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! I neglected this with my first build and paid the price for it. (The computer would lock up as soon as I touched the elevator bar.) I had to disassemble the HS and apply the grease.

Yes, silver based thermal grease prefered.  You can buy it at Radio Shack.

Yeah I already had the mobo out to check. It has a bracket on the back to allow it to bolt on.
I wanted to remove it so I could use the push pin heatsink that came with the cpu. But I can't
tell if it's glued on or just pressed on it doesn't seem to want to come off.
