awhile back I noticed that my computer was running a little harder than normal. Then I noticed on my tool-bar,on the right, next to the time,I have this little icon with two computers that are connected. Whenever I use the internet, one computer will flash and then send something to the other little computer and then it will flash. Ans sometimes, real late at night, when I'm on ARFCOM,both of the computers will be lit up and MY computer will run reallll slow.WTF?
What's going on guys? Please help me out!

Download ya some Spybot SD (great FREE anti-spyware program) and also some Avast Antivirus (FREE Also) and that will let you know if you have spyware or virus or stuff like that!  Just Google 'em up!

ETA: First!

the icon you see is your network connection be it dial up, cable, wireless, whatever.

...it should have always been there, although some people choose to hide it for whatever reason.

So is this normal? It just kinda freaks me out. My computer makes these whirring noises and all that. I'm running road runner. I know that it's the cooling fans and all,but it never made these noises before, like it was busting it's ass to do something.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. i'll check those sites out.

Too hard to tell from the info provided.

It could be windows downloading updates in the background.

It could be the new site design (just kidding!)

It could be your email client fetching email.

That "whirring" noise is probably the CPU fan kicking on.  That usually happens if your CPU is doing something...a program that made it do that.

Could be you have a trojan or virus on the PC that is doing some background process.

Did you happen to install some new software and notice it shortly after?

(assuming you have windows) do a ctr + alt + del and go into task manager and sort by CPU descending when you hear the noise/notice the pc running slow.  The responsible process will be at the top of the list

Have you added processor coolant?  There are slots in the case to add it so you don't have to open up the machine.

basically, it just tells you what process is causing this.  If you find that it is a program that you installed and no longer need, uninstall that program.

If it is a process that you do not recognize, google it and read a couple of URLs that talk about it to determine if it is a legitimate process (no spyware or malware)

If it is spyware or malware, search google on how to get rid of that process

if it is not spyware or malware, determine if it is alright to kill that process, make sure it is not a system process for XP- if you kill the wrong process your PC could crash.

If it is fine to kill the process. the click on it and click "End Task".

I agree;turn the machine upside down and add Prestone coolant to the case.

You can adjust virtual memory size.

Ok,

Open the case up.  Inside you'll see a heatsink.

Pull the heatsink out and use sandpaper to roughen up the surfaces a little bit.  While you're at it might as well grease the hard drive and oil the northbridge.

(don't do any of this.. )
