I recommend that you check out Afterdawn.com. There is alot of different way that you can do what you want to do. The first thing is that you have to do is decrypt your DVD. One of the best programs to do that is DVDFab. DVDFab is still being updated so it can handle the newer types of encryptions that are being developed. There are 3 versions of DVDFab, HD, Gold, and Platinum. HD will always be free, but Gold and Platinum are their pay versions. Both the Gold and Platinum will convert your DVD to MPEG-4 and they have a 30 free trial period. For more info about what they can do, click here. But by all means, check out the Afterdawns forums. There are alot of member who will be glad to answer any of your questions.

No one mentioned DVD Shrink? It works great for me. Plus, you don't HAVE to use compression so it'll rip perfect archival backups of your DVD's. DVD Shrink does not do exactly what the OP wants. What the program has to do, is take the various 1GB VOB files from the DVD that make the movie (I assume the extras like the menus and the special features can be tossed) and merge them into 1 large mpeg file. |

I tried Handbrake, but didn't like the quality of its output. What I usually do is backup my DVDs to single layer DVD+/-R. There is alot of shoddy media out there, so I only use quality media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. When I first started backing up my DVDs, I used these steps:
1) Rip DVD to harddrive with DVDFab HD. 2) Process ripped DVD with FixVTS. 3) Shrink using DVD Shrink. 4) Burn to disk using Imgburn. Now that I have been doing this for awhile, I've changed step 3. I now use DVD Rebuilder to shrink my DVDs. While DVD Shrink is a excellent program, it is what is called a "Transcoder". A transcoder removes data from the video in order to shrink it. This has a direct effect on the quality of the video produced. The more data removed the less the quality of the video. DVD Rebuilder, on the other hand, is an "Encoder". It re-encodes the video in order to shrink it. So, between the two, DVD Rebuilder will always have the better output at the same level of compression than DVD Shrink. Vulcan94 |

Handbrake is probably the easiest if you don't know about video conversions. I use DVD Shrink mentioned earlier, but you have to convert the files after. |

Gotcha. Makes sense now. Thx!
