Ok I need some help here! Basic stuff, (I think!) I'm getting a job at Microsoft, and from what I understand it's an IT job. I don't really know much about computers but I'm a smart guy (B/A, Master's in PLSC) anyways he says they will train me but if I'd like to prep myself for my interviews I should look into some things!

He said I should learn how to, or understand:

"Motor along the OS (XP I assume)" wtf does motor along mean?!?!

"Networking node" (I understand the point of a node, and the different mediums, but still need some clarification. . )

"motoring along the windows server"

"basic networking"

sooo I think general system administration. I'm hoping someone can send me a link to some tutorials, or have some advice for me, maybe a book you can recommend? I'm a smart guy, and I know I will go through some sort of intensive training. . But I'd like to get ahead and get my shit down. Help me out ARF! thanks in advance, Micah

I assume "motor along" means "use".

The supported OSes, internally, are Vista and 2008.

What campus will you be on?

Which body shop are you using? Volt?

You are getting and IT job but know nothing about computers?

I would think having knowledge of those terms already would be a requirement of the job.

I suspect he's getting a job a little further down the chain for a vendor; something along the lines of water boy. That's fine; I started as water boy. The jobs I can see he might be doing is racking systems or running the automated installs for a test lab; neither of these are very skilled positions, and Microsoft has a lot of labs.

I'm certain he won't be a Microsoft employee, but a vendor. Vendor jobs are easy come, easy go.

Makes sense.

y-e-a pretty sure it's a vendor job, which I have no problem with at this point b/c I'm fresh outta college and just need work exp. I have my brother who works at Boeing (software developer) coming this weekend to give me a crash course on XP or Vista, just wanted to know if there was anything I could research and learn in the mean time. . . and YES I do realize it's wierd getting an IT job with no tech. background but I certainly won't complain, and will do my best to learn what I need. ANYWAYS sooo any help out there or just snide commentary lol?

no snide commentary here. I asked a couple questions, though; which group are you working with? are you working through Volt or another firm?

And from what I'm told, this job entails going to expo's and setting up computers and talking to people!?! sooo not sure if it is strictly all IT. It sounds like i'll just be teaching people how to use windows!

I kind of doubt that; it sounds like what I initially thought, they need someone to rack systems. Based on the time frame, it almost sounds like it's for PDC.

I don't know if there's much you need to learn other than the basics of how to use Vista and 2008.

It usually takes a week or two for you to start employ with a Microsoft vendor, due to credit and background checks. Based on the speed of your employ, it sounds like this is a third-party (read: off-campus only) contract, which don't require the background check.

What is the name of the company?

Actually, you know what? I've asked politely so I could offer guidance, and you haven't answered, so forget it. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

I was writing my response while you posted your questions. . . Wouldn't turn down help in any fashion. . . I'm not really sure if it is through Volt or not. . I imagine it would be b/c they seen to do most of the contract work around here (least that's how it was for my big bro at Boeing.) But to tell ya the truth I don't know. I just found out I was getting the job for sure as of 20 mins ago.

All I know is that the job entails a good amount of travel (said I will only be in W.A. about 5 days a month ) and I know for a fact I'll be going to Expos, but what I'll be doing there is anyones gues. . .  but I'm ready and willing. Sorry I don't know more. All I know is I need basic troubleshooting and networking skills, which from what I hear should be a breeze. . . my buddy who is helping me get the job formerly trained inidividuals for this occupation and he's going to give me a 1 on 1 on Sunday. Also my brother has a couple books for me. . . I just hate knowing I'm going to be one of those retarded IT guys that my big bro always bitches about sooo figured I'd get a heads up! Sorry I can't be more specific.
