How may of you use openoffice instead of M$ at work?  I can't swing M$ Office for all our machines and want to see if anyone has done this.

Thanks

We have some that use open office.  I tried it but ended up ditching it.

It works for most users though.  I would say 40% at work use OO.

Problem is what - 75% or more of the world is MS.

Teaching people to use OpenOffice is a time waster. They have MS at home and expect to have the same programs at work.

The average users doesn't care about Linux, OpenOffice, Gnome, KDE, or a host of other open software.

They want MS. They know MS.

Many teachers and students at my school have been very happy with OpenOffice.  I haven't heard anyone complain about learning something new--they seem to figure it out on their own just fine.  Several students have REALLY liked the portable apps version, since it stays on their USB key and they have it wherever they go.

i would be personally interested, but my question is, can you do managed installations similar to MS office? as soon as we join computers to our domain, they automatically get MS office installed, with all of our customizations, via a GPO. also, can you manage updates for openoffice on a domain?

there is not much room for OO at my workplace, as alot of our software is heavily integrated into MS office. for other applications, free is hard to beat!

Well, do you have a ton of custom Excel Macros and/or Access databases?  If so, you're stuck with MS until OO gets that stuff working.  internet debates seem about 50/50 on whether or not that can happen.

For now, it's for MDT's in the units I'm thinking about.  Not attached to a domain, stand alone computer.  No Internet for them either.

All of our forms and reports are in Office, for now.
