I'm sure this has been pondered already. It's a given that a router is needed for internet protection via whatever service DSL,Cable etc. Well how about a Broadband over Power Line router? Even if you don't have internet thru your power company shouldn't it still be considered a point of access to a computer system that needs to be protected against?
Thoughts, please!

Huh?

Are you saying that because the power company has BPL you need to hook up something to protect yourself even though you're not using the service?

In that case, it's a "no".

If there are no systems to protect then you don't need to put anything on the connection. In fact, putting a router on there would increase vulnerability in this situation. Routers can be hacked too.

poweline should have a basic nat, and basic firewall included.  the other other security you would want to enable is "encryption"   so if someone else close to your house hooks up a adapter they won't connect to your connection.
