A friend of mine has been playing with 8.04, bot 32 and 64 versions.  I don't think it's quite ready for prime time yet.  He had all kinds of little issues getting stuff to work, and then it would break with the next round of patches.

I'm still running 7.10 32bit, and have no plans on upgrading for a while, especially since I have 'everything' working finally (DVD rip and burn, my Zen synchs, GW and EQ2 playing, flash working, network talking, printer printing, etc)

Here is my new desktop

I ran into a few problems where I tried to have Ubuntu be on 1 HD and Windows on another, but for some reason that did not work out

I ended up booting off the live cd, then told it to reformat both of HDs and then I was able to fully install 8.04

It will take a bit of getting used to, but it is growing on me very fast and it is nice not having to worry about viruses or a firewall!

I can understand that. I still have my primary computer, a quad-core,4GB, 1TB Storage behemoth running XP

This is most definitely an experiment to learn my way around and try it out. It would be quite sometime {4-6 months} before I would consider making my primary computer a linux box.

Yeah.  I just recently became 'Windows Free' a couple months ago.  Both my PC's in the house are running 7.10.  Feels good!  And, with WINE, anything I can't get to work under Ubuntu, I can usually get working with WINE.  I do think Ubuntu is probably the best distro out there right now.

Good luck with your 'conversion'!

Don't connect to the internet without a firewall.

I haven't used Ubuntu in a long time, but I'd imagine it uses iptables. Please tell me you didn't have it disabled when you installed.

You don't need to worry about viruses, but a firewall will help stop any unauthorized remote access, and it needs to be running. If any computer can interact with the internet, it can be manipulated, regardless of the OS.

+1

you can still breach a pc and grab files off of it.

The thing that people boast about not having to worry about a firewall on linux is the fact that it is nearly impossible to install anything onto the PC- such as malicious software.  To install software, you need to gain root access.

But yeah, you can still take files off of a pc without root access

I wouldn't say there is "No" firewall. There is the hardware wireless router which would provide some security.

Cable modem -> wireless router -> linux desktop

How do you setup a firewall in linux?

Ubuntu has a firewall in it already, built I believe off those IPTables.  There is a gui app you can install to further play around with it.  Sorry, I can't remember off hand what it's called, but if you go into the 'add remove software' type app, and search for firewalls, it pops right up.

I think I found what you are referring to, called "Firestarter"

I got that up and running.

If it is sitting behind a router, then you probably dont need a software firewall.  Most people dont run routers, so a software firewall is needed

Using a router doesn't make you completely safe.
I would still recommend a firewall.

I have a copy of ubuntu loaded on my Vmware server that I have been playing with.

Wine is a program that allows you to run some Windows programs under Linux.
Not all programs will work, and a lot will be buggy, but some programs like uTorrent work great.

isnt a router a firewall?  Most people think 2 firewalls is overkill

It stands for WINE Is Not an Emulator IIRC.  It's been around for 4 or 5 years, at least.  I'm suprised to hear it hasn't been thoroughly debugged yet!

What about Samba?  Is it still relevant or has it been replaced with something simpler?

Samba is still out there, big and bad.  Essential if you're going to talk to other OS's.

WINE is getting pretty good lately.  As I've mentioned, I have GuildWars and EverQuest2 running under it.  I also use DVDShrink under it to rip DVDs, cause for some odd reason, I can't get linux to make reliable DVDs, yet I can rip it under a reverse-engineered hacked version of windows running under linux.    Sometimes, I just gotta sit back and tell myself the same thing I tell my end users at work:  'It's all magic!'

How do u "update" the version from 7.xx to 8.xx

This is my first time installing, and working with, linux so i'm clueless.  As of writing this, i'm installing 7.04 on my PS3.  So how would i go about updating it to 8.04 later on when it's supported?

In the Update Manager utility that pops up in your task bar by the clock (also located under System, Administration), there is a shiny, candy like button that proudly proclaims Click here to upgrade to 8.04.   Or wording similar to that.    Every time I get some updates, my mouse wanders dangerously close to that upgrade button!  heh.

How do you install the package for SMB? Have not been able to figure that one out yet...

Well, I think it's all installed by default.  I have all my computers running ubuntu now, and my NAS device is setup with a samba interface on it by default.  I got lucky this time, cause normally when I have to mess with samba, it is an Epic Battle for the Ages!

But, you do have to use the Synaptic Package Manager under Tools, Administration to install the samba stuff.  Mine shows the following stuff as installed:
libsmbclient
samba-common
smbclient
