Okay guys, Im a typical lame'o I know enough to get myself into trouble. Heres the problem: I have windows ME on my old PC. I have a chit ton of music files on it (yes SOME of them are pirated) that Ive been collecting for years. Many of them are obscure and for the most part only available by luck.

Something on my system messed up. One day I turn the PC on and it says "insert correct disk and press any key to continue" or something like that. I look up that error and they say I need to enter "sys c:" to restore the system files. I try that and I get "cannot find the system file in the standard locations on drive c" notice. Im not sure where to go from here, I dont have a windows ME disk, I dont think one even came with the computer. I have XP that I can install on the PC, but I dont want to lose my 15GB music file. How can I recover the file? Is it possible?

Thanks guys.

Take that hard drive and put it on the other computer as a secondary drive. It should read it and see if anything is left on it.

Don't format it. Stick it in another computer, or put it in a USB enclosure. You can also trying burning this knoppix iso to CD and boot from it. If the drive isn't totally hosed you could see your files and copy them off to a USB drive or network share.
