Hello.

I'm supposed to pick out a web server and I'm really not up to speed on these things anymore.

At any rate, it will most likely be running Red Hat Linux or Centos, and need to run Apache, PHP, Python, MYSQL, etc... to host web pages as well as some type of database beyond just database-driven web pages.

So, if someone can recommend some specifications, such as speed, disks (number and
size), backup unit, etc, that would be helpful.

There is several thousand dollars available to purchase this server.

Thanks!

Is this for an intRAnet? If it's for the intERnet just get a dedicated server from theplanet.com or one of the millions of other providers.

There are a lot of benefits to running your own web server though, as opposed to using a hosted website somewhere else.

It's a long story -- the original thought was to just use PBwiki, but someone way up on the food chain thought it would be better to go bigger and better, hence the need for a server, etc...

Someone else will maintain the box.

After a year or so this will be someone else's problem.

For goodness sake stay away from RAID0.  Unless you're going to ghost the thing every night you need some form of redundancy.  Go with the RAID1 setup and use larger drives.  RAID0 will give you faster performance if you're looking to load this up with a ton of apps and connections, but a RAID1 with 15K drives will be AOK.

Dell's basic warranty is teh suckz0r. You get overseas folks that will read you a script for ten minutes while you're foaming at the mouth knowing you just need a mother@#$%ing hard drive.  Get the Silver option for 4-hour response and you'll speak to some good 'ol boys in TX.  Remember that this level of "server" is just a glorified workstation and you'll probably need that four-hour response in two years.

Thanks.

I'm still trying to figure out what we need.  I did talk to Dell, and the first quote was over $9k.  I have $5k total to spend.

It was hard to tell, but it seemed like they wanted to add those extra services.  Someone else is taking care of the actual box, so I don't know if we need any.

As I stated, if you are interested in a rig being built pm me.
As far as hardware goes, it would be what ever you needed. We build servers for what they are needed to do.
