| A buddy brought his daughters laptop over & it's having a serious issue. Once it boots up & you log on the desktop icons, task bar & everything else dissapears then reappears every 5-10 seconds. I can't get anything done because when everything vanishes it's aborts all & any actions. I've tried chkdsk & it found some errors, so I ran it w/ the \F to fix it , it has to reboot to do it & after it's done nothing changes. I've tried to run sfcscannow from the command prompt window in both std. & safe mode & it says it's an invalid command. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks. |
| Sounds like Explorer.exe is crashing and restarting. If chkdsk found some errors but that did not correct the problem I would try either format & reinstall or a non-destructive reinstall of Windows. Either way, backup your data any way you can now. You could also be dealing a hard drive thats about to fail. |
That's it I'll bet, when I run task manager the cpu usage spikes from next to nothing to sometimes over 60% when the desktop icons vanish then reappear & it's explorer.exe that is doing it. Thanks for the input gents ! |

Before you run off and format try this. Put the original install disk in and reboot. Choose to boot from CD let it do its deal when it asks if you want to install or R for repair choose R. When you get to the C:\ spot try CHKDSK /R let it run it will take about 45 minutes or so but it should fix it. I use that trick at work all the time to repair systems that have ntoskrnl.exe corruption and more. |
