I have a wireless connection, 54mbps.  Signal strength excellent.  I guess I need to clean out crap. Isn't there a site where you can post screen shots of what processes are running and people suggest what you can ax?

I'm sure I'm overtaxing the computer.

Pentium M 1500 MHz, IBM Thinkpad R51, 1.5 gig ram. Windows XP service pack 2.

years for ZA and AVG, not so long for peerguardian.  I just got rid of it, I haven't done file sharing for a while.

well office is NOT going to slow down your internet connection.

your system looks fine to me(without getting way into it).   i'd give your isp a shout and see what they say.

whats your download speed when you download this file.  give it 30 seconds to equal out

What he said.

You'd have to have a REALLY screwed up machine to slow a transfer down to 80k/sec when your ISP is capable of delivering much more. From the HijackThis log posted, there's nothing there that's out of the ordinary. I'm not seeing anything that would potentially hog bandwidth, and there are certainly no processes that would steal CPU cycles to the point of hindering network performance. The fact that it's speeding up to 200k/sec then slowing back down again suggests (in no particular order):

1. Crappy radio in AP.
2. Interference.
3. (Most likely) trouble at the ISP's end.

Eliminating the wireless as a test is a great way to go. If it still behaves this way plugged right into the router/switch, my money's on the ISP.

Damn internet out all day yesterday!  I called Comcast and they strung me along for an hour changing all my settings and doing a bunch of c> ipconfig BS.  never helped. then I had to go to dinner.  So I called back today and reported an outage and they said Bull, you have signal going to your modem.  I responded that both my compters and my phone all see only one network in range instead of the 7 normal ones, so obviously something is wrong with the signal in this area.  I had the cable plugged in direc (not even the router, right into the cable modem, and got alternating LAN cable unplugged and limited or no connectivity).  I asked to speak to a supervisor and he was like "ok, I'll reprt an outage" which I can only assume was a lie to get me off his back.  I'm posting from work.
