So I've been out of the country the last year.  Vista was released.  I was running the 64 bit beta before I left on my SFF Shuttle PC.  Now I have to buy the real deal or continue to run free 64 bit XP.  Which Vista version is the best bang/buck.  I've never actually bought an OS before.

Also, I think a dual core AMD proc @2Ghz and 2G of RAM should do, right?  I have seen and screwed around with Vista on laptops and it was a slow pig, but I hope it does better on my home rig.

Vista will be my first OS purchase also... I've been running freebies since DOS.. now that I retired out of the land of freebies I'm on my own.

2g and 2g will be fine with Vista.. Vista performance can be optimized just like XP.. I just cleaned up my neighbor's Vista home laptop.. 1.8ghz, 1g ram.. got rid of the crap and slimmed down some of the glitz.. it's pretty fast now..

I'm bypassing the "Vista Home" versions.. they won't run Virtual PC 2007 .. I'll be getting the "Vista Ultimate" 32/64 upgrade DVD's ...

The big question is .. 32 or 64..???..

I'm thinking 64.. and If I find an app that won't run in 64 I'll put it in a Virtual PC with 32 bit installed..  Is that legal???

There's no reason to run Vista 64. If you're installing Vista (or XP), use the 32 bit version. If you're installing 2003 or 2003 R2, use the supported version for your software and hardware.

If you don’t have apps that will not run under Vista 64bit and drivers are available for your hardware there are plenty of good reasons to pick Vista 64bit over Vista 32bit security being one and memory access another.

I ended up getting Vista home premium (64 bit).  I couldn't justify the 100% price increase for ultimate, when none of the features it adds are ones I could see myself using.  So far all my hardware and software is working like a champ.  The one exception is my video card, it's a really old Gforce card though, and I have a new one on the way.  My old one works ok with a single monitor, but when I run dual I get artifacts and crap.  I have 2G of RAM and a dual core proc, and it's pretty snappy.  I guess if you have the proper hardware it's not a pig like it was on every other computer I have used it on.  Of course it's even faster with aero off, but I kind of like it.

It is not a pig on older hardware if you have good drivers and enough memory. 90% of the problems with Vista stem from machines with not enough memory and new computers loaded down with trial software and other crap from the factory.
