My monitor crapped out last night, so I ran up to Staples and got an Acer 19" LCD. Hooked it up and hate it.

The sharpness of the screen sucks, I have ghosting, and I get a headache looking at it.

I don't know shit about LCD monitors, but the one on my laptop is clear as a bell.

Anything I should be looking at as far as settings in order to get the new monitor usable?

Thanks!

Is your graphics card set to drive the LCD monitor at it's native resolution?

LCDs can (usually, always?) look horrible if driven at other resolutions, especially (in my experience) lower resolutions than native.

I have no idea if the card is set to drive it at it's native resolution.  I've never heard the term. Is that an easy thing to check?

Thanks!

ETA: The monitor resolution is 1440x900. Is that the native resolution? If so, I set it in control panel and it looks like crap.

Yes. 1440x900 is the common native rez for 19" widescreens.

It may be too bright? See if there is a 'setting' for Web mode or something. Or turn the backlight brightness down a notch.

Most screens will also have a auto-adjust feature on them that changes various monitor settings on the screen to match your output. I'd look for that and see what happens.

wide screen

i don't understand the point of it....

most of them have to be at some ungodly high resolution to work right   1600X1200 or higher

I love my wide screen at work... I can fit more stuff on the screen. I have both of my monitors at home at 1600x1200 and I the one at work a little higher than that because of the wide screen.

Resolved.

Took the Acer monitor back to Staples, went to Best Buy, bought a different brand and it works great.

Thanks for all help!

I'm in the market for a new monitor (need to upgrade from the cheap-but-fantastic 15" I have on my desk right now).

What did you end up buying?

I wound up with a Westinghouse L1975NW. 19" widescreen. $209.00 at Best Buy. It got great reviews and seems to be a nice monitor.

I've been pretty happy with the Dell flat panel monitors.

I have a 24" widescreen (2407FPW) at home and a 22" at work.

Yow! 24" Kinda does away with the reading glasses, huh?

Ghosting issues could easily be, and often are, due to the cable you use.  Typical monitor cables are cheap junk.   And LCD monitors tend to be more demanding of cable quality.

Does your computer have a digital video output?  (DVI connector)

If so,  use the DVI connector to connect the PC to the monitor.

If you don't have a DVI output, get a video card that DOES.

Ghosting can also refer to the monitor not being that great on response time too.

speaking of monitors, at work this website works fine. At home I have 17" monitor, and whole website won't size. When I checked settings, I can only get 'default monitor'. so no options there....any ideas???
