OK this is the deal, I hope someone can help.
My father has an older emachines 667ir, the
manual says it can only handle 256mb of ram.
My question is, is there any way to maybe flash
the bios or change some settings to change that?
Or is that just the way it goes. There is one open
dimm slot on the mother board and I put a 512
in, but the computer did not recognized it. And
when I pulled the 128 that was in there out, it
still did not recognize the 512. As a matter of fact
the computer screen just stayed black.
Thanks dphill

You may be out of luck on that one.  The support site for that machine only shows 256MB supported with no option to download a BIOS update.  See here:  eTower 667ir Support Information.  All the memory sites I see also show 256 as max.  Unless you can track down a compatible update AND that update was designed to increase or change the memory that can be used you won't be able to do much else.

older motherboards will not recognize large capacity memory.   no way around it
