When I hit ctrl-alt-del I get the task manager screen. ANyway I have LOTS of processes running. Dunno what all they do but is there a list that I absolutley need? I have like 10 svchost.exe processes. How do I know which are good things to have and what may be slowing down or harming mty system?

Depending on what you have loaded for software, some of the items running are needed, and some may not.

Go to the run button under the start menu, and click it.  In the box, type in msconfig and click go.  If the msconfig.exe is an available program, a screen will pop up, if not, they you will need to download the program and drop it into you windows folder to run the program.

Now with the Msconfig program running, go to the last right hand tab on the top and click on the start up menu.  From there, go through the list and start seeing what programs are being loaded on start up.  Some programs will need to load, but others like quick task do not need to load at start up.

Short version is list what you have at start up, and we can tell you what you can unclick to not load at start up to help speed up your system.  Also, if you download spybot, there is a system startup program in it that will give you the same list, and even a description if the program is a problem or not, and even de-clicked from running at start up.

The BEST products on the market, and they happen to be free, are Process Explorer (Cruze5 beat me to this one) and the very new Process Monitor... These utilities are looking at the whole enchilada, and believe me, there are a LOT of ingredients here...

These tools are geared toward the professional, but anyone can learn what these two tools bring to the table. There is a Free Video presented by Mark Russinovich (the man who wrote these utilities) on how to use Process Explorer and a host of his other free tools.

If you even suspect an adware/spyware or virus infection, this should be one of the first tools you reach for. If for no other reason you are unsure of what a program does or where it came from, these applications will zero in and tell you EXACTLY what is going on inside your system.

Google any suspicious or unknown processes that these programs uncover, and you will likely find a fix without having to turn your system over to a program which requires constant definition updates to recognize malicious software. The MKI warm wet brain still beats the smartest heuristic tools out there.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll get working on it right away.

However, when I did the msconig.exe thing I got the list of processes at start-up BUT trhe list of processes is MUCH longer when I hit crtl-alt-del. WHy is this? How do I copy and paste the list here to show you all what I have?
