I have 512mb or ram installed on my computer.  I did the properties page of my computer and it is only saying I have 384MB of ram.  Why isnt it registering that I have more? its 2X256 so is one not working completely?  I want to upgrade to 1gb so maybe this is a good reason to but any help in why its showing less would be appreciated.....

Would that show in the system properties?  It seems to give the stats of the machine so I would think(and Im pretty sure in the past) it has shown 512mb.  I recently had problems with it and turned out to be a bad HD but I wonder if something with my ram didnt get screwy too as it ran super slow before totally crashing.

Where is the best place to get Ram from?  I will probably just go to best buy or other actual store if it isnt much difference from online

Try going here: www.crucial.com/store/listmfgr.asp?cat=RAM

Click on "scan my system" and it will tell you what you have and what you can use.

You damn guys have me checking my system now.

Is 512 mb RAM enough for my;

# CPU Manufacturer:  AuthenticAMD
# CPU Family:  AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2800+ Model 12, Stepping 2
# CPU Speed:  1599 MHz

Should I get more? How much is enough? Overkill???

I notice it lags here and there, but Im old, everyting lags when you are running out of time.

512MB is "enough" for most things but if it were mine I would get 1GB. Especially for a laptop why limit the already limited performance of a laptop by skimping on memory.

For my general purpose computers, both desktops & laptops running XP PRO AND PRO64, i use 1 gig. for my dedicated gaming rig, 2 gigs.
to the OP, do you have onboard video ? if yes then that is where your other 128mb of ram is going. mmk

I talked to BB about it today and they said its partially dedicated to the video card.  I will be upgrading though to at least 1gb just to kick it up a little.  It takes a sec to open apps and such so hopefully that will help......Is it a big improvement and something I will really notice or just a minor thing that will leave me asking why did I spend $140/

Cav,

Do you do any gaming?  If not 512mb should be fine.  Upgrading to a Gig or more, you would see a noticeable difference.

what kind of memory do you need? i'm sure you can do better then $140 at newegg depending on what you need. how many slots on your MB? mmk

Not enough.

/Someone had to say it. If you have to ask how much is it; you can't afford it mentality.

RAM can also be sucked up if you have one of those all-in-one card readers on your system.

Disable what you don't use.
