OK, I have a laptop for work and wireless surfing.
We have a Dell that works OK for quicken, etc., but is a basic machine from 5 years ago.
I have a two boys, 7 and 4 years old.  They like video games.
What I want to do is get a new tower and two controllers.  I want to use the same monitor, printer, keyboard, and speakers, and somehow have an A/B switch to go from one tower to the other.
As to the new tower, I want a good system, not cutting edge, but one that will meet the "system requirements" for games for a few years.  I am not looking to spend a ton on it, either.  I also want good controllers, but don't know anything about gaming.
Suggestions?

There are some KVMs that allow sharing of USB devices and IIRC, speaker/headphone jacks.  I have no experience with these, but the local Fry's sells them.

I don't know the difference between controllers and gamepads.  Whatever the kids need to play the games.  Years ago I had a joystick.  As for two, the two controllers would be one for each kid, each attached only to the gaming tower.

Any suggestions on the gaming tower?

IF you want to go the KVM route, let me know. I got one from a fellow arfcommer. Figured i'd get a lot of use out of it. I got it hooked up, and haven't played with it much at all. Sounds like you'd get alot more use out of it.

As for separate machines for surfing and gaming, why not jsut use the same one?

If you want the kids to be able to both play at the same time a computer isn't the way to go. Matter of fact I don't know of any 2 player games for the PC.

Get your kids a PSP2 or xbox 360 and call it a day. Hooks to the TV and you don't have to worry about them browsing the internet.

+1, PS3 comes out November 17th- plays Blue Rays for you, games for them....and @ $500-600 will be a far superior performer to a $600 pc gaming wise........the only issue is your kids are 7 and 4 and probably don't need a $600 gaming system :)
