I have reinstalled windows (repair installation) on a windows XP box.  I did a repair installation because this system kept consuming vast amounts of system resources and would eventually hang/lock up.  The repair seems to have worked, but sincethe reinstall there is something wrong with the print spooler.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe

The service keeps stopping and I cannot print.

Is there a way to reinstall this set of files?  I cannot print from this system without this service, obviously, but I cannot find anything through Microsoft to directly replace these files.

I installed a windows security patch for the service, hoping that it would replace the files, but no luck.

I also installed SP2 and let the computer update through the Windows Update service.

Any advice?

what kinda printer are you using.   have you tried removing the printer driver, and software and reinstalling it.

they also make "special" removal tools that cleans the registry and all the files associated with the printer.  sometimes you have to contact the manufactor to get it though.  Sometimes its listed on their web site.

how much memory are you running on?

Lexmark 6250.  I downloaded a new driver for it. Installed the driver and still get nothing in the printers control panel.

"The operation cannot be completed" is the error message if I try to do anything related to the printer.

I can manually start the spooler service.  It keeps generating an error and stopping.

Not certain o nthe RAM, I can check it later, but I don;tthink it is a factor.  This computer had been printing just fine to both local and network printers until the repair installation?

My next step is to do another repair, maybe it will correct it if I re-install it.

In my own experience,  if XP screws up ONCE on a print,  say you cancel the print from the printer,  then it will NOT print again until you restart the computer.   Reprioritizing the print queue to max priority,   purging it,  attempting to print again or resume, NOTHING else works.

That is always how it has been for me, without exception.

so i this is what you did.  step my step.   unplugged the usb cable.   uinstalled the lexmark software.   restart the computer.  redownloaded the driver > ran the program   plugged the printer into usb port when instructed. (try a different usb than you used initially)    also how does device manager look?   are all the other system drivers loaded??   no yellow exclamations right ?

i looked on lexmarks web page for 5 mintutes trying to find a removal tool for that printer.  you might have to contact them directly to get the tool or to completely remove it.

when you say you are "starting" the spooler   you mean under service.msc ?

under C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool .  is their anything unusualy under those folders? say the document you are trying to print.  if anything simial to your documents is there delete it.

if you have unisntalled it like instructed above and it still doesn't work i would call lexmark..  they will have some tricks up their sleeves

No.  I ran a repair install and did not disconnect any hardware.  I had several network printers on this box, connected through our LAN.  None of the printers that were previously available, including the lexmark, are listed under printers, unless I manually restart the service.

Once they become visible, any action in the folder (such as trying to set a default, check a status, etc) generates an error message.  The service then quits, and all printer icons disappear.

The only item that remains i nteh control panel for printing is the 'add a printer' icon.  Selescting it also generates an error message.

Device manager looks right, no yellow warnings.

I don't think the error is being caused by the Lexmark.   I the libraries for the printing services must have been damaged or installed incorrectly when the operating system was repaired.

You are correct.

I removed two files from the spool folder (as directed by a solution posted on another website.  Apparently the files might have ben 'ghost/vapor' files leftover from an incomplete print job?

Removing the files did not help.

I am going to do another repair install and see if that fixes the problem.  If not...I'll call Lexmark.

Thank you for your help and patience

Looks like you were correct.  A second repair was worthless.

A clean install is next.

Damn.

Format, reinstall XP, reinstall all drivers, virus protection, spam-mail blocker, ad nauseum.

Everything is working again, but... damn, it was alot of trouble

SAve one bullet for yourself, man!

I had the opportunity to go from teh application/teaching side to the hardware/installation/adminstration side.

I declined.

Smartest move I ever made!

Next time try cleaning the registry before going thru all that trouble. There are plenty of utilities that back-up and clean the registry of broken links/refs which most likely was your problem.

I used several registry cleaners.  none of them were able to even see a problem with the spooler.

It found other problems, but I use CCleaner on a regular basis at the firestation.  This was the Chief's PC and it gets checked about every 2-3 weeks.
