SQL Server Express

It should be released publicly on Nov. 7th.  I have it installed as part of my MSDN subscription and Visual Studio 2005.

Looks like it'll be a good solution for implementing small databases.  It has a limit of 1GB of RAM, 4GB database size and 1 CPU, which is plenty for a lot of small to mid-sized applications.

Just to see how well it works, I made a local copy of my Life, Liberty, Etc. web site, restored the database (about 60mb) into SQL Express and it works great.

Oracle's announcing about the same thing with similar limitations...a bit of me-too going on.  However, SQL Server has become quite the database.

...if you don't like performance.

I love the ease of use of SQL Server, but that thing just can't
keep up in an enterprise environment. I dread my company's
current migration to Oracle, but our SQL servers are a terrible
bottleneck.
