Gents

I need your input.  I am looking for a good gaming computer.  1600 bucks is my limit.  I want to primarily play games and surf the net.  I have been looking at the following:

Alienware
Tigerdirect
Dell
Compaq

Who do you guys recommend?  What kind of computer do you recommend also?

Thanks
Max

Build your own!  I built one for my bud for $1700 and that thing freakin' hauls balls!

AMD 64 3200
1GB PC3200 RAM
2x80 (160GB) SATA Hard Drives running in a Striped RAID Array (VERY FAST!)
ATI 9800 PRO XT 256MB
802.11G wireless
GigaBit LAN
6in1 Flash drive
16x DVD Burner
High end cooling and Power supply
LogiTech 5.1 Surround sound
ViewSonic 19 inch Monitor.

well.... you get the idea!

That price also included all the little bells and whistles like a wireless keyboard and mouse!

I'd 2nd the idea of building a AMD 64 (939) based system.

Best bang for the bucks. However I would stick with and Nvidia based Graphics card. Costs a bit more, but will save on headaches later.

I game on AMD - I WORK on dual Xeon's...

BTW - the SATA raid is a cheap and easy power trip!

You'd be a complete fool to buy an Alienware, unless you have a tree that does grow money in your backyard.
Compaq's suck for the most part, Dells are overrated.... build your own, it's the only way.
If you can build legos, and put a CD in the drive, you can build your own computer.

gotta say build your own
I've heard Alienware makes good computers, but at 2 to 3 times what it would cost to build one on your own with the exact same specs

+1 build your own
+1 Athlon 64
+1 SATA RAID
grooVe's is an excellent example and has dropped in price a couple of hundred already...

Can't agree there.  If you want ultimate performace in your AGP card (think $1000 on a dual-card arrangement in a PCI Express) and skimp on the rest of the build Nvidia is an option...of course the stability of said arrangment is still up in the air.  If you want all around performance and stability for the BEST value, stick with the ATI 9800 family for a bit longer.  If you are going to splurge NVIDIA, may as well mortgage the house and grab a 64 FX or Pentium Extreme while your at it.
