I am interested in getting a larger monitor for a computer I use for work. I started looking today at 27 inch monitors and my assistant suggested that I get a television instead of a monitor. Apparently they are cheaper for larger screens. I use this computer for word processing, spread sheets and internet access. No games or videos outside of the occasional Youtube video.

My desire for a larger monitor is to go easier on my old eyes (sigh....). I want more screen real estate and make everything easier to see. Small fonts are not so easy on my old eyes anymore. I currently use a pair of 19 inch monitors (one in landscape, one in  portrait). I would be looking to replace the landscape monitor, or maybe both if the price is right.

Thoughts from the urban commandos? Recommendations?

Thanks.

Cheaper because they only do 1920x1080.   Some older 4x3 monitors had a higher pixel count than today's "HD" monitors.

If you are working primary with text, it'll be big and OK. If you're making lots of graphics for HD viewing or the like, then get something with more NATIVE pixels and don't fall for that "interpolated" BS.

they are hard to look at, like was posted, the resolution isn't' good enough for close viewing.  10 feet away on a wall it would be fine though.

Well there are the 4k ones out there is you want to pay their price. Else a 1080p at least 4 feet away depending on the size isn't bad. Even with the 4k and want less than 30+ still have to be at least 4 feet away to see it clearly. Now about 10 feet away a 55" works great even with 1080p. I use a 24" monitor not TV so the 1080p doesn't mean much yet if you turned this into a TV it from the specs would be a 1080p monitor. Just find a good sized monitor and use it at the correct resolution and most programs allow you to zoom in. If just for web browsing you can always zoom in without any issues.

How does that compare to the Dell 27 Monitor S2715H (which is $100 cheaper):

TV as a primary display sucks unless it's part of a HTPC.

S2715h has a glossy screen which is not desirable unless you like looking at reflections of yourself/your surroundings.  The matte screen of the P2714H is much better especially if you want to minimize eyestrain

Also the s2715h has vga/hdmi connectors compared to the p2714h's vga, dvi and displayport connectors.

I use my Dynex (that I've had for 6 years now) 720p TV as a monitor for my work computer (when it was re-purposed it was laying around). I will say, the 26" HP monitor my father has for his desktop in his office is a much better solution to my 28" TV as a monitor...
