Son and I built a new machine over the weekend, now trying to get stuff transferred from the old machine to the new.
OS is Win 10. New machine has 250 GB SSD, 2 TB HDD x2. Old machine has 1 TB HDD x2. Win 10 is already installed on the new machine SSD, works fine. What I want to do is put some of the user files on the SSD, but not all the photos, music, etc. in the user files (no room). The photos and music for each user I want to put on one of the regular 2 TB HDD. I tried doing this with LapLink PCMover, but even directing the program to do the above, it still tries to shovel 900+ GB of stuff onto the 250 GB drive, and fails when the SSD gets full. Any tips on how to accomplish this easily? Thanks, Doc H. |

That won't work for programs, though, will it? Those need the registry files or whatever it's called, and those are buried in the bowels of Windows somewhere, right? Doc H. Reinstall the programs. You're not going to be able to copy them over and retain everything |

There is a way to do this.
On your new machine, surf to the directory with your users' stuff. On Windows 10, this is: C:\USERS\XXXXXXX Where "XXXXXXX" is the username. Now, there are several special folders in here that you can play with: Documents Downloads Favorites Links Music Pictures You can right click on any of these, get properties, and then select the "Location" tab. In that tab, you can tell it to store that stuff somewhere ELSE, including on one of your big non SSD drives. What I do, is create a "USERS" folder on the big spinner, then pick what "bulky" files I want to live there and create subfolders for those, e.g., "PICTURES," "MUSIC," and "DOWNLOADS" for sure. Then you point the files in you C:\USERS\XXXXXX\ directory there using the "location" tabs. |
