| I am ready to buy a pocket pc but not sure what to go for. I was looking at the iPaqs when I discovered Dell's Axioms. Has anyone here had experience with Dells's Pocket PCs? What is considered good for processor/memory? |

Nobody has experience with DELL PocketPCs. The Axim is their very first one, and they are just about commencing delivery of ordered units. On a more generic note: PocketPC 2002, 200 Mhz CPU speed, 16 megs of ROM, 64 megs of RAM should be enough to use those critters comfortably. Should you need more memory, like for mp3s, or books, you can always buy more. A 128MB Compact Flash card can be bought for about $35 and takes about 3 converted CDs worth of music and a dozen books (doc, html, or rtf converted to lit). |

Nobody has experience with DELL PocketPCs. The Axim is their very first one, and they are just about commencing delivery of ordered units. They have been on sale on Dell's website for a couple months now. They have even offered specials on them ($50 rebate or 32MB CF). I got the impression they have been available for a couple months. |

Quoted: cool, thanks for the info. I guess all the backordering is a good sign that they are a good deal. I say! $199 for their entry level model, with current technology, as opposed to the $137 I've paid on eBay for my H-P Jornada 547 (first appearance 3 years ago, now discontinued, and no OS upgrades available), yeah, I'd say that's a good price. |

Did your new toy arrive yet? Here's what a guy at some other forum writes about his: I recently purchased an Dell Axim "for work" (hehe) and I have to say that I'm actually starting to read on it more than on my REB. I'm using Ubook of course and with the new "scroll" feature and Vlad's simple skin...... wow. (time for a donation) As for the Axim itself... well I haven't had a lot of experience with different handhelds, but I'm definitively a pocketpc guy. I really haven't been happy with any of the "palm" handhelds I've used. I did a lot of research before I went with the dell and found that it was the best bang for the buck. I did have a couple of complaints when I first got it,(record button is super small, and the side forward/back scroll dial on the side is really stiff) but I've found that after a few weeks they don't really bother me anymore. The most important things (Screen clarity, backlight, battery life) are most superb on the Axim. Awesome deal on the Axiom here: http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&oc=OCAXIM5_DHS400 I wouldn't buy any of the offered accesories though. $129 for a 128MB Compact Flash card, geez, I got the same for $40 at ebay, and you can a similar price at every retail store. |
| UPS says it is out for delivery now. Dell's website is funny. If you look under handheld accessories, the memory is a lot more expensive than if you just go to software & peripherals/memory. I picked up a 256MB CF card for $50.00 shipped from Dell, it is back ordered though. The 256 is for my digital camera. I am tired of only getting 12 pictures to a 64MB card. Also, right after I ordered the Axim, they dropped the price, but after calling they gave me the new discounted price plus a 64MB CF card. |

I've had my 400 MHz Axim for about 2 months. This is my first Pocket PC. I moved to this from Palm devices to get better networking support. Here are my impressions: 1) Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 sucks balls. The first day I had to reset this thing 10 times trying to get a wireless card to work. I reset my palm devices maybe 2 times in 4 years. This OS is like all Winblows operating systems; it lets user software crash the OS. Since then, I've learned to be gentle with it, and things are running smoother. 2) I love having a CF slot that I can use for storage, Wireless, GPS, etc. It is so much more extensible than the Palm, Sony, and Handspring PalmOS PDAs I've had. To me, this is worth putting up with point (1). 3) Despite some horror stories I heard about the first Axims that came out, I have had zero hardware problems with mine. The screen & battery have manifested no issues at all. 4) Considering that I got this thing for $250 after sale pricing and a rebate, I am very happy with the purchase. |
