I think it's a switch?  We Just moved into a new house and the previous folks ran cable throughout the house to have hard wired connections.

There are boxes with three to four network plugs in each room.  Those wires all run into this switch where the modem/router is.

The switch is labeled with 1-12 ports.  Should I be able to plug one port into the router to have all the network drops work?  Or do i need to plug in each port to the router? And how would i do that since There are only four ports on the router?

That isn't a switch, it's a patch panel.  Basically, it's a termination point for the wiring from the rooms.  You would still need to run a cable from this each of the active ports to a switch, in order to use the connections.

Looking at the switch/router you have in the floor, if all of the ports on the patch panel has a "live" connection, you would need an additional switch, as you only seem to have 4 ports on the switch/router in the floor.

FYI- you can piggyback switches.

ETA: Updated for clarification and additional info.

ETA2:  You could buy something like this to plug in all of the ports, and use one port on the router, and one on the new switch, to connect the two.

I'm confused.  Or maybe I'm just an idiot.

How is that different than what i have?

By switch you mean there is a box with a power cord and it says network switch 10/100/1000 on it? Right? Plug one cable from one of the four LAN ports on the router. Plug the other end into the switch. Plug the wires that go to each room into the switch. If you need more ports then you will need to buy another switch. Plug the new switch into the old switch.

That is a patch panel. Not a switch. That is where the wires from the different rooms are terminated to. You need at least a 16 port network switch and 16 cat5e cables. See whollyshite's post.

Ditto,
The patch panel is just a cable punch down block to JR-45 ports from the other rooms, and not a switch.

A switch is what allows the ports to communicate with each other instead.

Since they don't make a 13 port switch, you will need a 16 port switch instead if you want to wire all 12 ports on the punch down block.
Note, check the amount of cables to the punch down block, since you may less rooms wired on the punch down block that it has ports, and may be able to get away with a smaller port switch.

The cable modem gets plugged into port 1 on the switch, then the patch panel ports get plugged into the other ports on the switch.

Thanks for the help guys.

Got the switch figured out.  Now I need to get a bunch of short ethernet cables and to get it all sorted out and cleaned up.

Next problem ...

I have Verizon Fios service and also have my Linksys router.  Router is plugged into the network from the Fios modem, it has a signal according to the light on the front but if I connect to the Linksys router I get no internet access.

I'd like to be able to use this as it is in a more central location and I get an excellent signal pretty much anywhere in the house.  So how can I use this router with the Verizon modem / router?  Can I?

Connect a laptop/computer directly to the router (probably Port 2). There is probably a hard reset button on the back of the router that you have to press with a ball point pen. Press it. Go to your laptop and type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into your browser. This should start a setup wizard that will show you how to configure your router with your modem (at some point in this process, you'll be instructed to connect the modem to the router's Port 1 via a patch/network cable).

Isn't the FIOS box already a router? Do you get a public or private IP when plugged directly into the Fios box? 192.xxx.xxx.xxx is private.

Yes, the FIOS box is already a router but it's in the master bedroom closet.  I'd like to use my Linksys since it's in the living room and I get a better signal throughout the house running off that.  I'll try to reset in a bit and see how it goes.  Dryer problems at the moment ...

I'm a little confused do you want to locate the linksys right next to the verizon modem by the patch panel.

That said, you may have to disable the router functions of the verizon modem.  I had the same issues with TWC.

Google your modem's model number with 'disable router' and you'll find instructions on how to do that. This might help LINK

I eventually bought my own modem because I would randomly see the wifi enabled on the TWC modem with default settings.

Then you'd better hook up the Linksys as an access point instead of a router. Otherwise you will be running a double NAT. That would cause problems. Google using your router as an access point.

I wouldn't recommend this.  If verizon pushes out a patch/update to the router you could end up losing all of your settings.  When TWC would do this everything would get reset to the default settings, not good when the wifi ends up broadcasting in the clear with a default password and SSID.

Verizon modem / router and patch panel are in the master bedroom closet.  I want the Linksys router in the living room where it is more centrally located and can get a better WiFi signal throughout the house.

If Verizon pushes an update to the Fios box how is it going to change the settings on the Linksys AP? The Linksys will be a dumb access point for wireless. Nothing will change on it.

I was referring to the verizon provided modem.  The modem will have routing and wifi capabilities any settings you change to the fios router may or may not be lost when verizon screws with the modem.  I give verizon credit for at least putting instructions on the web on how to disable the router portion of the modem.

OP if you have multiple jacks where you intend to keep the linksys, just use the patch panel to route a cable from the modem to the linksys then back to a switch at the patch panel.  A multi port switch can be purchased for less than $40 on amazon.

I think I have it wired right, but there is something in the settings on one or both routers that isn't right.  I'll go plug in a laptop to the jack in the living room to make sure it has a signal but it should.

note:
this gets complicated because VZ FIOS set top boxes (standard and DVR) rely on 1) special DHCP parameters which are provided by the FIOS router, and 2) holes/NAT mappings that are hard-configured in the FIOS router.

configure the VZ FIOS router with a unique SSID "BigFellor-A".
configure the linksys router as an access point, with a unique SSID "BigFellor-B".
do not plug anything into the "internet" port of the linksys router.
plug a cable from one of the "switch" ports of the linksys router to one of the "switch" ports of the VZ FIOS router.

configure your client devices (iphone etc) to talk WIFI to either "BigFellor-A" or  "BigFellor-B".

result:
you continue to have only one subnet.
you have a pair of wireless networks.
DHCP addresses come from the VZ FIOS router.
routing/NAT/port forwarding is done by the VZ FIOS router.
wireless access for a specific SSID is provided by the VZ FIOS router.
wireless access for a specific SSID is provided by the linksys router.
as you move around the house your client devices will pick the best WIFI signal and seamlessly transition back and forth.

above works for me.
in fact i have three WIFI AP's (qty 1 VZ FIOS + qty 2 other).

Did not know all that.  My experience was only with TWC and I don't have set top/DVR's.
