Thinking about a web-based security system (with cameras) for our cottage.  Would prefer one that does not require a monthly subscription.  Do such systems exist and what are the bette, more reliable, systems available.

Thanks,

JDG

The only subscription you would need is internet service.  High speed/broadband preferred.

Most security dvrs today are internet enabled.  Once installed and configured, you can access your live images from any computer and most smart phones & tablets that have internet access.

Mine is a Q-See.  Has been reliable for several years now.

Can you limit it to web access within your network?  I want it to where I have to vpn in to the network to view the cameras, not broadcast over the net.

Yeah just don't open the ports.

Edit: If you have one that is setup for Cloud access not so much but for a basic network connected DVR just don't open the viewing ports on your firewall.

We just put in a couple of Nest Cams and are pretty pleased with them.  It does require a subscription if you want to store video ($10/month for 10 days of storage or $30/month for 30 days) but costs you nothing if you want live streaming.  It's nice to not have to worry about storage or software updates.

I've built a few networks for my buddy's Hikvision NVR camera system installs and they can be accessed over the internet.  He has mentioned remotely managing/viewing them from devices such as phones or tablets, so Hikvision may offer an app for it.
