Hey guys! So I'm not incredibly knowledgable on building computers, but I've been messing around in the pcpartspicker.com website, and trying to build a 'budget' gaming computer for under $1000 (w/o monitor) and have come to the below link.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qyqwJx

My goal is to have something that run close to any game fluidly, but dont need the top top of the line stuff (ex. the GTX970 instead of the 960 I chose)

Also was informed that the CD/BD drives are close to obsolote and I wouldn't need one, however I have a lot of stuff that are CD's and what not that require it so thats why I added.

Anyways, any suggestions, criticisims are welcome!

Doesn't look bad. I think you're focused a bit too much on the processor side and not enough on the graphics card for a gaming computer though. I'd get something faster in the graphics department, even if it meant going with an inferior processor. Also, get an SSD. you'd be crazy not to.

Okay so help me out here with what you mean by that lol.

I thought the 960 was a pretty awesome graphics card, am I incorrect? And also for the SSD, what is that? I always see people say it, but I've never ventured into what it is before having this want to build a computer to replace my steadidly outdated 2011 Alienware laptop

The 960 will run all modern games just fine.

SSD is a solid state hard drive, they are significantly faster than traditional spinning disk hard drives. Typically you'd use a SSD for the operating system along side a much larger traditional hard drive for storage. It makes a huge difference in boot up time.

Oh okay, so I went in and changed the barricuda I had to an 850 EVO SSD, only added about $50.00 so that isn't bad.

So is the processor I chose overkill?

I don't think so personally. Whenever I build a PC I always try to get the best CPU I can even if it means stepping down the GPU to a lesser model. They way I look at it is the better the CPU you start with, the longer the PC stay current with just a GPU upgrade down the road.

Neat website.  Would have made it soooo much faster looking for upgrades!  Fortunately it came up with the same things I was already looking at to update my MOBO and CPU.

I just put the EVGA GTX960 into my computer to replace my aging but still capable GTX460SC.  Huge difference I will say.

What is the difference with all the different GTX960s? Meaning the EVGA you just said, and the MSI i have in mine, or the Radeon version I saw as well?

[#8]
The GTX 960 is a huge step down from the GTX 970.  While the 970/980 are both GM204-Maxwell architecture chips, the 960 is a completely different chip (GM206); just sharing the 9xx prefix.

At $200, adding another $50 will get you a Radeon R9-290 these days, and the 290 is a huge improvement over the 960.

ALSO: check Microcenter for CPU/MB bundle deals. I got the exact same CPU/MB as you have listed for $226 after Tax from Microcenter because of their instore bundle deals. (Yes, buy CPU, the MSI Z96 G5 for $10)

The clock speeds and cooling (heatsink and fans) vary with the different manufacturers.

ETA: you may want to wait a few weeks before buying a GPU right now. AMD has some new stuff coming out this month so prices will probably drop on the current gen cards.

(these games are getting old by benchmarking standards. I know that DA:Inquisition and Witcher 3 stutters like crazy under the GTX960)

I don't think it's overkill; it's just that the graphics card is so much more important for a gaming build. For not a lot more money, you can get a much faster card. BTW, that 850 is a great choice. I'm about to pick one up myself.

The differences in brand between the same card, i.e. 960, are insignificant. Buy whichever is cheaper or has a better cooling solution.

Okay so here it is now updated,

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Hth8qs

Also looked on the Microcenter website and found the same CPU/MB combination for about $75 cheaper so that was an awesome suggestion thank you!

I probably wont have this build fully finished until I'd say August-ish time, so hopefully by then if those new cards come out I can save some more money on the one I chose.

I've been playing Witcher III almost exclusively lately since it came with the video card (EVGA GTX960).  I've not had any issues at all with the video card and the game.  Running ultra on all but the hair thingy.

I know it def wouldn't run with a 660. My bro upgraded to the 970 to play witcher. That means I got me a $20 660!!

I play it on my even less powerful HD 6850 and I get pretty much the same performance as the console version (medium settings 1080p @ ~30fps). Not ideal but totally playable.

I guess we have different FPS needs I don't like it when the frames fall below 50, it feels inexplicably off.

I actually upgraded from a HD6950 (from my Skryim build) to the 290X.

I found the 6950 more or less is the same power as a R9-270, so upgrading to anything less than a 290 was going to be a waste of money.

OP: Check Microcenter in store deals. They have more bundles that they don't advertise online, which is usually even a bigger saving.

AFAIK, the R9 3XX series isn't due to come out until after Q4 2015; which probably means you won't see another round of price cuts on the R9 2xx or the GTX 9xx series anytime soon. The R9 2XX series just underwent a price cut about 2 months ago.

I guess... but the 980Ti/TitanX cards aren't really in your everyday person's market, and so their release really never affects pricing on other cards.

Where'd you hear about the 3XX cards though? The tech specs have been floating around forever now, but I haven't seen anything about a firm launch date

There was a flurry of rumors about a launch at Computex this week to compete with the 980Ti. Also hearing in 2 weeks at E3.

2016 launch would be massively idiotic of AMD.

nice. Wonder how big of a difference their HBM will make over GDDR5. Based on overclocking, I feel like memory bandwidth is rarely the bottleneck except in synthetic benchmarking tests
