Ok, I got nothing so I'm looking for some direction.

I make data conten cds and dvds for work.  No rocket science here...typically include ppt files, pdf's and maybe a video, but nothing huge or complicated.

My latest is relatively small, 141mb...

I was burning several (15), when all of a sudden I get an error that the blank cd I just inserted isn't valid.  I think WTF, and load a new one.  Same thing.  WTF?

Walked away, 12 hrs later same thing.  I'm running WIN7, Dell system.  What the heck is going on?

Thanks in advance...

dvd/cd drives do go bad.

I have had that happen a couple of times.

can you read other media?

do you have a different batch of cd's to burn?

another burner to try the media you do have?

Most likely the drive just crapped out. Good news is that dvd-rw drives are dirt cheap so it's really not a big deal. You can pick up a replacement from amazon or newegg for $20.

Could be, but its a new system.  Can still read media.  I've plugged in an external dvd writer that I know works and I get the same message.  Tried 3 different manufacturer discs

OK disregard my previous statement then, if it's doing it with multiple drives it's got to be a software problem.

Are you using an app like Nero or Roxio to burn the discs or just the built in CD/DVD creation wizard in Windows?

You could try running this: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/

Nope, can't use that one due to .gov restrictions.  Trying to save myself a call to our IT guy who hates the LE side of his job....(he's not LE, and thinks all of us type with our knuckles)

May be unavoidable.  Sounds like there might be some Group Policy thing going on there dealing with removable media.

Maybe.  I know just enough to be dangerous.  But I was well into burning, as in 20 or so before I ran into this issue.

Can you get into the registry, to adjust the Upper & Lower filters?

(See Step 2 here:)

You may have to talk to Nick at IT, regardless.

Good luck!

So, was Nick able to fix the problem?

Weeeellllll...

No and yes.

Ended up that there was some sort of corruption that was more widespread than the symptoms expressed in this post.  It's always bad when IT support says "hmpf, I haven't seen that before".

Ended up having a new pc imaged with a previous saved back up.
