Cox Ultimate, 150+ mbps available.
Has a Cisco cable modem, got between 50-70mbps down. That modem routed, and i wanted a bridge, so I got a Surfboard SB6141. That modem gave me 177mbps down!!! Lasted for about three days, then wouldn't train anymore. I replaced it with my Cisco while I waited for a replacement, went back to 50-70mbps down. The new Surfboard just came in, its provisioned, and now I'm getting 50-70mbps down.... So what happened? Did the first 6141 do some sort of fancy footwork that resulted in absurd speeds, but short life? Nothing else has changed; cables are the same, network is the same, position in my cabinet is the same, and Cox's provisioning of my account is the same. Only thing that changed is the modem and the speed. I am confused and very curious. I feel like I ran a blown Chevy 350 until it died young, and then went back to my reliable 4-banger Honda motor! |

To get the high speeds of current internet connections the modems now a days need to lock onto multiple downlink frequencies at the same time. Your current modem is probably only locking onto four while the mac daddy was locking onto eight.
As for why it died, the term I always use is infant mortality. |

I tweaked pfsense a bit and am now getting 70Mbps down, but still a far cry from the max. My Atom D2550 is alledged to support >500Mbps throughput, and I'm only running a few extra services (snort etc). |
