Hey guys
Lets start off by saying I am not computer literate but have been known to type in a few command prompts here and there.
Just kidding, I'm horrible at computers. Anyway I have an iMac I just bought. 2008 24" 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 6 GB MHz DDR2 SDRAM (As if I know what any of that means). I ran boot camp on it for about a week. No problems except for the occasional automatic shutdown for updates (windows). I have to run Windows 7 on it for a design program (SolidWorks). But the past 2-3 days while running Solid Works the computer would crash but I'm not sure Solid Works caused the crash. No warning...just screen goes black and the computer is off. The last time it happened the screen flickered black 3-4 times and turned off. After that it won't reboot into windows. I've taken the partition out, repartitioned it and tried installing bootcamp on it probably 15 times. It either freezes at the "Starting Windows" screen or with a completely black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left. I previously installed bootcamp from the same disk earlier this week. Now its non functioning. I have no idea if the CD disk or the computer is the problem. I have no idea if its a software problem or a hardware problem. I've taken the ram out and tried rebooting from individual ram sticks. I have done the "Verify Disk" on the Mac side and everything is good. The Mac side works flawlessly. I just cannot get into the Windows side. It freezes EVERY SINGLE TIME. I've used this same CD to install bootcamp on 5 different iMacs. I also did the command+alt+P+R. that made no difference but ever since then the cooling fans on the computer have run non stop. From the second you push the power button to the second it turns off. Please help me. I am so frustrated right now its insane. |

First, I would update the video drivers in Windows 7. If that doesn't work, I would try this:
You might check to make sure you have the latest version of Boot Camp installed. If it is the latest version, test your RAM for errors. That can cause the crashes you are talking about. Since you have installed Windows on 5 other Macs, I am sure you know what you are doing on that front, so I won't go into formatting the partition, etc. I haven't used Boot Camp in a long time; I use Parallels for Windows. |
| instead of bootcamp, try virtualbox so you don't have to repartition anything. parallels is nicer and has a free demo. these will be slower if they work, but I get that you need to get moving and slow go is better than no go |

I can't even get windows going to update drivers. It just says starting and thats it. No progress or anything. I have booted up without the different RAM sticks installed to see if one is corrupted. Everything seems fine. Whats the likelihood its the disk? |

its possible you have a hardware issue and the usage is hitting a failing powersupply. Can you flog it hard running just the mac os and it will not crash to black? I had bad capacitors in an older imac power supply that would pole axe the machine. next up would be to investigate and maybe replace the harddrive, I would back it up, format the drive and reinstall. If it still crashes out, i would try a replacement HD. Another possibility is bad RAMM To run window os on a mac, I really like VM Ware over bootcamp.

Possibly the problem, especially in a machine that old. Check this and make sure your machine supports whichever version of Windows you are trying to run. Might also try running bootcamp assistant again, removing the Windows partition, and starting over from scratch. |

I took it to work today and got it running. I have no idea what changed but it worked. I think I may just pony up the dough and buy a nice terabyte harddrive and hopefully it never happens again. |
