Hello. Please bear with me if I use a wrong terms.
I have a HP desktop model a6807c with a Intel dual core CPU E220 @2.40ghz Desktop. 5.00 GB and 64 bit operating system. A few days ago the computer was very slow on this site, which it never is. I didn't try and do a virus scan( I have Verizon for Internet and security).i had defragmenter it twice and it was still running slow. I tried to do a system restore for 3 days before. I set up the system restore and went to lunch. When I came back and checked about two hours later it was still on system restore and I didn't think it was working correctly. The only way I could get out of the system restore was to do a hard shutdown. I did a hard shutdown and when the computer came back on, it looked like it had a fake Microsoft warning, the font and letters didn't look correct. Also, and I can't exactly remember, it wanted me to either s send the problem to Microsoft ,or not, and other things. No matter what I did, I couldn't start the computer to get out of that warning page. I had tried about 5 times all different ways and nothing worked. I then started hitting some "F" buttons while it was starting up, and also the "escape" button while it was starting up. I must of done something right because I finally got the computer to sort of work.by sort of working, it was like the computer was brand new out of the box. I had to register the computer name and set it up like it was new. That's ok because I can use the computer now and I only lost my "favorites" and I'll have to reload AOL. I don't have anything else on it. My question is, if I had some type of virus, or whatever that caused the problem, is it still on the computer? The computer is working at regular speed. I don't want to put any passwords in yet. I also haven't reloaded any security software yet. Thanks for the help. |
| Download MalwareBytes and run a full scan. Also, make sure you have an antivirus installed. If neither of these pick something up, you are probably safe. If you are still uneasy about the virus maybe still hanging around, the only way to be 100% sure if to format and do a clean Windows install. On the plus side, it will generally increase performance doing that since Windows tends to slow down over time and use. |
