This is the last week that Microsoft TechNet subscriptions will be available for new purchase.  I've got a couple of laptops and a desktop that I need to upgrade the OS on (yeah, I'm still running XP) and additionally the copies of Office Pro, Visio and a couple of other items would be convenient for work plus let me do some experimenting with MS technology.  The $199 price is a good deal but what concerns me is what happens after the subscription expires.  The license keys used to be in perpetuity, but a couple  of years ago they changed the wording on the license and it would suck if the keys quit working after the subscription expires. They aren't being very clear in their explanations with the shutting down of TechNet.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Just make sure that you are planning on using it for purposes that are in line with the license. But, I really like having my subscription.

First I've heard of them getting rid of TechNet subscriptions.  I believe any licensing rights ends with the expiration of the subscription but not 100% sure.

It is the misuse of licenses that killed TechNet.

If you want software for non-development purposes, you still have to buy the license.

The licenses ends with technet subscription.
The software that is available for download is different from the standard commercial version.  It requires special technet license keys to activate and it dies as your subscription runs out.

It sucks. Don't do it.
