Just curious about what device I should set up to be my VPN.........

I have the Asus RT-N66U which supports VPN
Or the Synology DS-412+ which has VPN as well

Which would be better to use as the VPN, and why? I was told yesterday not to use the router because it's an edge device, but I don't see what that has to do with anything.

If you want a VPN to your house I'd probably recommend getting an ASA 5505 but I' have a background with Cisco devices.  You could probably get one off eBay for a decent price.

I ended up just using the synology. I have better security controls and measures I can take on that box versus the router.

I loathe cisco command line. So stupid. I think it's the only command line interface that actually could benefit from a GUI.

I tested out the VPN from work today, and it worked great. Was able to VPN in, hit my plex interace, and start streaming media. Although I did have to drop the resolution down a bunch....but hopefully google fiber will eventually fix that.

So next device to configure to the VPN will be my dads Roku in Costa Rica where he lives. I visit him soon, so I am going to attempt to set it up for him. Since you can't directly configure a Roku for VPN, it's a little trickier than normal apparently. But yea, I got my dad the Roku to watch stuff in Costa Rica, didn't know that because he had a Costa Rican IP he would be blocked from watching most of the channels. That's why he needs the VPN, so he has an American IP.

The ASA can all be done via GUI but command line is quicker.
