My main hard drive, a generic bulk-packaged 640GB drive now claims its maximum available space is 581GB. I also have two Western Digital 1TB drives, one of which is nearing capacity. All three of these drives were purchased in 2008. They still work, but I am a bit concerned that their age means they will fail sooner rather than later. I have copied most everything onto an external drive, but I do have a bit left to transfer over.

That brings me to today. I have a Crucial 256GB SSD drive and a WD Caviar Black 2TB 7200rpm drive arriving tomorrow. I am trying to figure out what absolutely needs to be on that SSD, and what I can place on the WD.

Obviously the OS (Win7) needs to be on the SSD, but my other programs such as Adobe Creative Suite, anti-virus, and Steam I am not sure about. Especially since space is at a premium!

Also, right now my OS and all of my programs are on the main drive, my media files are on the two 1TB drives. Will my performance be increased moving almost everything onto the single 2TB drive with the OS living on that SSD?

Am I being utterly confusing?

Install the OS and applications to the SSD as you want them to have fast response times.
Most people have no where near 250GB of programs so you should have room.

Store media, files, music, documents, pictures, etc on the hard drive.

If you have 4+ gb of RAM you can probably also shut off the Windows pagefile, so it doesn't continually write to disk.
Might also want to check out SSD tweaker to make Windows more friendly with SSD drives.
