My old computer went TU. Running Windows Vista. The hard drive is OK and out of the tower.
Data was transferred from the old Vista machine to a Windows 7 lap top about 1.5 years ago using the transfer utility in Windows 7. More data has since been added to the old Vista machine and I'd like to move all of the data, accounts and user data/preferences. Question: Is it possible to use the transfer utility built into Windows 8 to make the swap from the old hard drive? I can get my hands on the gizmo that will power up and connect the old HD to the Windows 8 machine, and run it as an external drive. Thoughts? Advice? Thanks, Grumpy |

I would transfer everything manually, that way nothing is missed The transfer wizard if for the lazy Yeah, but I'm an Ol' Dude, and not as computer savvy as many who visit this area of ARFCOM, thus, I do what I can, ask for advice, and try not to screw things up beyond my ability to set things straight. The "wizard" has worked OK in the past, maybe not perfect, but all I'm trying to do is get data that was added since I transferred everything from the old Vista drive to the new W7 lap top. If that were not the case, I would make the transfer from the W7 lap top. Frankly, I really wouldn't know how to perform a manual transfer beyond what the software would tell me, what to look for, or what to ignore. Not "lazy", just not as tech savvy as many others. I've learned as I've gone along over the past few years. These devices weren't even dreamed of when I was young - or even in my early 30s, and that was a while ago. Grumpy |

it should work fine. the program isn't doing anything special. it is just finding the most common places for people to store files and moving them for you so you don't have to dig down into multiple sub directories. so it should not be a compatibility problem Thanks! I wondered how that worked. |
