got my parts for my new computer build...

i7 3770k
16gb ram
nvidia GTX660Ti w/ 2gb
120gb ssd (boot)
WD RE4  drives for storage
bluray / dvd rw

going to get fully away from M$ with this build, will be running Ubuntu Studio
basically to render/edit hd video's from skydiving and other sports.

last computer I built was 10 years ago (AMD x64 @ 2ghz) w/ winXPp
it couldn't keep up with HD video

hopefully this will take me another giant leap for mankind down the road....

hmmm, won't boot any of my ubuntu x64 live disks

I to have 10.04 x386 (live)  on usb and it boots right into it.

ETA:

hmm, checked settings, thought it might be an AHCI issue with SATA...

didnt make any changes, gave it another try and it booted Ubuntu Studio 12.04 x64 (live)'

everything seems ok now.
tomorrow I'll install onto my sdd and make things "permanent"

Sweet! I'm building a very similar rig (got here from your post in my processor thread). Big differences will be is that I'm sticking with M$ Win 7 Pro, running dual SLI GT 460s, and three 23" monitors. I'm *hoping* my 850W power supply will be enough.

Sucks. I'm using this mobo ga-z77x-ud5h. Still setting things up. My hard drives did not like the transition from the old machine to the new one at all. One corrupted, one not showing up at all. Trying to figure out wtf is going on now...

everything is back up and running...

I added a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 evo Cooler to it

it runs about 14 deg F cooler than the stock fan

if I fire up a 3d FPS game and play for an half an our or more, the temp only rises about 10 deg.
it cools down pretty quick as well.  I am very impressed.

Red_5, I'm hoping to do a very similar build soon.  How noisy was the machine with the stock cooler?  How about with the  CoolerMaster?

I would like to build a very quiet machine (we have several machines in a small room) and I'm thinking about spending $100 or so and getting a radiator-based CPU cooler to help keep the noise down.

the Cooler Master is a tiny bit louder than the stock fan, but I'm also running about 14 deg cooler.

I think its a fair trade off.. it's way less noisy compared to my Athalon X2 system (I built >10 years ago)  it's replacing.
