Can anyone recommend a good IP camera that is controlled/records with a software based DVR ...
I need something with good enough quality video to identify a person or car tag at about 50-75 feet, day or night.. I just need one right now but would like to add more later. Ethernet is ok, wireless would be better.. Thanks... |

I vote for the Vivotek IP7142
-Built in infrared illuminators allow operation in total darkness -Manually variable focal length (3-9mm) to suit a variety of mounting positions -Weatherproof -POE so you only have to run one wire to it -Accessible via internet -Included software supports viewing up to 32 cameras at one time -Supports 2 way audio -Motion sensing software can set to record only when something is moving within a specified zone of the video frame. -Can be set up for a low res output stream for access with your cell phone -Rugged aluminum construction -1280x800 Resolution -Wide dynamic range sensor allows you to view detail in the very bright and very dark areas of the frame. Combine that camera with a TRENDnet TPE-S44 POE Switch and that will get you operational. POE switch powers the camera and it connects your PC to the camera. Connect the POE switch to your router at home and then you can provide the camera signal to all the PCs on your network and even provide a signal via internet to your cell phone or remote PC if you wish. This system is not the cheapest but it gives you great versatility. Vivotek makes some great quality cameras for the money. Vivotek also makes a wide variety of cameras for various applications and their software works with all of them. I would not recommend wireless. Many variables contribute to interference and loss of range. I bought a wireless system (priced at $300) that eventually crapped out after 1.5 years. The Chinese manufacturer no longer exists so I could not get it repaired or order replacement parts for it. Vivotek is more expensive but they have good customer service and the cameras are built like a tank. Buy once, cry once. |

That Vivotek IP7142 only shows a resolution of 720x480. Yep, you're right. I accidently copied that spec from the IP8332 page |
