| Need some advice. I would like to have a dashboard console I can bring up to consolidate several applications. links, to-do lists etc for my work computer. I envision a web page maybe, but saved to my HD instead of published to the web (can't for info it will link to). I want to have a calendar, task reminders, links and embeds to word and Excel files on the HD and hyper links to websites I use often. It would be cool to have weather widgets and the like as well. It's an XP machine. Any recommendations? |

The word you're looking for, OP, is "widget".
Googling "XP desktop widgets" got me this link, one of many: http://www.guidingtech.com/4550/install-desktop-gadgets-windows-xp/ Take a look and hunt around for more using that same search phrase. |

I have a small webpage/site I keep on my home PC that has tons of links to websites on the net as well as files or other webpages on my PC.... Works great for me... |

What you want, is SharePoint. It's an expensive pain in the rear, but management types LOVE it. For a small shop it doesn't require that much power on the server either. For a cheaper solution, Google has "iGoogle" start page that lets you build a page of widgets. You can link to internal documents on it (they just won't work from elsewhere) if you need to. Integrates RSS feeds, weather, to-do list, calendar, clock, links or "bookmarks" and a whole bunch of other stuff. |

Thanks for the leads. I'm won't be able to use any company servers (i'm in the field) and can't store it off local HD, but widgets would be OK to use "on" the dashboard. Problem is most won't work with XP.
ETA- iGoogle looks to do most. Just can't find out how to make links to locally residing documents. |
