An external drive is the same thing, just in an enclosure.

ok, I'm not a computer nerd by any means, but I kinda know my way around one enough to be stupid. How would you install the windows cd again, just like normal?

Clone your drive, then set to boot on the external.

Do you know how to use Linux?

I know there are other clone utilities out there but I usually stick to using Gentoo or a Live Linux distro CD as it gives me the best results using ntfsclone.

Basically, you would download a live CD like gentoo, boot it up with both the old and new hard drives plugged into your system, mirror the hard drive partitions, then copy the file system using ntfsclone.

After copying you would go into the BIOS of the computer and change the boot priority so that the "External USB" or "USB HD", whatever it is called in your specific BIOS, is at the top of the list.

If this isn't English I'll have to clarify further

I just take the drive out of the enclosure and install it in the machine.

External HDD's running an OS are susceptible to USB drops which can make for a frustrating time. If you have a ESata or other connected external drive that might be livable.
