One of the DBMS machines in the company was greatly overloaded. The programmers in the department couldn't figure out what would be causing it, so finally they asked me to come over and take a look. I logged the queries and exectution times for half an hour, and found that one particular query was taking up 77% of the total processing time.
I looked at the query and the table, did two "create index" statements, and voila... that query now takes 1.11% of the processing time. The load on the machine has dropped by a factor of ten. The programmer's supervisor is going to have a "special little talk" with him today. |
