So, I have burned Ubuntu 11.04 onto a CD and I am trying to install it alongside my existing Windows XP Pro (SP3) on my Dell desktop. I have set the BIOS to boot the computer from the CD drive first. When I start the computer with the Ubuntu CD in the drive all seems to be going along smoothly, however it doesn't move past the "ubuntu" logo that I assume proceeds the installation menu. Eventually, if left on its own for several hours the computer will switch to a blank black screen. I just turned it off at that point and tried to do it again, with the same result.

Do you guys have any pointers as to why its not loading/installing properly?

Thanks!

Could be a lot of things.

First thing I would check is the CD.  Could be a bad burn.

Have you tried the CD in another computer?

I haven't done that yet, I'll try it tomorrow and see if that works. I bet that's it, because I did everything else according to the website's instructions.

Is there a reason you're wanting to dual-boot over running Ubuntu from a USB thumb drive or external HDD?

I've never liked dual-booting because whenever I tried to get rid of whatever distro I was using, I'd have to restore the Windows MBR.  Now I just pull all the HDDs and install to USB drive or external HDD(if the drives are plugged in, it will still fuck with the MBR), then bring up the boot menu whenever I want to boot in to linux.  I don't know if this is an issue with all distros, but it definitely is on Ubuntu and Mint.

Eta:  Booting from a USB thumb drive is incredibly slow, but works in a pinch if you don't want to dual-boot and don't have an external HDD.

If you install ubuntu according to the directions on the ubuntu website it should go super smooth.  First it installs a program called Wubi.  Wubi allows you to install any authorized version of ubuntu in dual boot mode and you don't have to mess with partitions or the MS boot loader.  Basically it runs Grub after the the MS MBR instead eliminating it.  It also leaves Windows as the default boot so you have to choose ubuntu to boot it.

I installed ubuntu 11.04 last week.  Hated unity so bad that I wanted xubuntu instead.  I opened Wubi uninstalled ubuntu and installed xubuntu all in about 30 minutes.

I have been messing with dual booting for about a year now and nothing is easier than using Wubi.  No messing with partitions or restoring the MS MBR.

By the way.  Xubuntu is waaayy better than unbuntu.  It runs much quicker and is more intuitive than unity.  At least for me.

Unity sucks... install Gnome-Desktop.

I had this happen when trying to install with a 1080p monitor hooked up.  I hooked up a 1680x1050 and it worked fine.  It was a driver issue between X, my video card, and the resolution.  Once installed and the drivers updated everything worked fine.  That was back with 10.04 though.
